Acknowledgement of Country

We pay our respects to the Traditional custodians of country, to the Elders, past and present. We acknowledge today’s Aboriginal community on all of lutruwita, who are the custodians of this island, and we recognise their continuing connection to land, waters, and culture. Always was, always will be.

Abled Kitchen

Abled Kitchen is creating opportunities for inclusivity in Launceston’s food culture.

FermenTas, in conjunction with St. Giles, aims to empower our disability community with the skills and knowledge to participate in our local food sector. Experience with sourdough baking is offered in a kitchen environment, with an opportunity to dive deeper into the art fermentation through an Abled Kitchen course. Participants in Abled Kitchen must be 18+ years old and identify as having autism, an intellectual disability and / or learning disability.

The Abled Kitchen Story

An Abled Kitchen experience is an introduction into a commercial kitchen setting and sourdough baking. Each session runs for 2 – hours, over a four-day period. Through this experience, participants will gain a basic understanding of baking.

An Abled Kitchen course is a deep dive into the art of fermentation and the kitchen skills required for employment. Participants will graduate with an understanding of the fermentation process and food production. This course runs for 4 hours, over a four – day period, with a Saturday work experience opportunity. Please note to qualify for an Abled Kitchen course, you must first have completed and Abled Kitchen experience.
